What is knee osteoarthritis?

Knee osteoarthritis means changes in the cartilage, bone and tissues around the joint that become more common with age or after old injuries. It causes pain and stiffness, but it does not mean the knee is "worn out" and bound to get worse; many people stay active with less pain with the right care.

Common signs

What usually helps?

NICE guidelines recommend exercise — especially strengthening the thigh and hip muscles — as the core treatment for knee osteoarthritis, together with understanding the condition and weight management where needed. Manual therapy is used alongside exercise, not instead of it. Injections or surgery are decisions for a specialist doctor after assessment.

How we treat knee pain at Revibe

What about sports knee injuries?

ACL and meniscus injuries have their own rehabilitation programme, before and after surgery following the surgeon’s instructions. See the sports injuries page under related pages.

When do you need urgent medical care?

In these cases go to the nearest emergency department straight away — instead of booking physiotherapy.

FAQ

Can exercise damage a knee with osteoarthritis?

No — the right, progressive exercise protects the joint and eases pain over time. Mild discomfort during exercise is acceptable as long as it settles within 24 hours.

Do I need an X-ray before physiotherapy?

Not always. Osteoarthritis is usually diagnosed from age, symptoms and examination. If there are signs that need imaging or a medical opinion, we refer you to a doctor.

Is walking good for knee osteoarthritis?

Usually yes, in a gradual and comfortable way. We help you choose the right distance and pace and build them up step by step.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on your condition and how long you have had it; after the first assessment we explain the plan and the expected number of sessions.
